The Surprising Definition of Happiness

What is the definition of happiness?

It’s a gosh-darn shame that the dictionary and thesaurus know more about the true nature of happiness than our current society does.

People tend to believe that their happiness comes from external circumstances – the new car, the better job, the lovely girlfriend.

The truth is that happiness in an inside job. It’s a D.I.Y affair: a do-it-yourself project.

Being happy is an internal feeling caused by your own self-talk, your own attitudes, and the way you feel about your life.

Dictionaries — Synonyms for Happiness

The various dictionaries define happiness with such words as “high spirits, joy, paradise, pleasure, and satisfaction.” They’re right on.

Furthermore, as the wise thesaurus teaches us, the synonyms for happiness are words that describe the positive emotions:

It’s fascinating to me that the thesaurus includes the following words in particular as synonyms for happiness: paradise, blessedness, rapture, sanctity, good spirits, divinity, and seventh heaven. These synonyms reveal that happiness has a spiritual nature.
