What does science say about laughter?
Laughing is fun. Laughter nourishes celebration. Laughter is good for your soul. Just as importantly, laughter is good for your health.
One of the health benefits of laughter is that it relieves the effects of stress on your body and mind. In our current stressful culture, it’s a boon to have a simple and fun way to reduce stress.
A study by pioneering medical researcher Dr. Lee S. Berk of Loma Linda University is very relevant to health. He created a study on the neuroendocrine and immune effects of positive emotions.
The participants were told they would be shown a funny video. Measuring the chemical responses in their bodies showed that their mood state improved 27%, and their immune systems were positively affected even more.
The control group just sat around the clinic and didn’t watch the humorous film. They had no increase in mood or immune system.
The following information is a report in The American Physiological Society Journal (April 7, 2008) about the study done by Dr. Lee S. Berk.
“In 2006 researchers investigating the interaction between the brain, behavior, and the immune system found that simply anticipating a mirthful laughter experience boosted health-protecting hormones.
“Now, two years later, the same researchers have found that the anticipation of a positive humorous laughter experience also reduces potentially detrimental stress hormones.”
According to Dr. Berk, the study team’s lead researcher — “Our findings lead us to believe that by seeking out positive experiences that make us laugh, we can do a lot with our physiology to stay well.”
Laughter is an amazing medicine. I do believe that knowing about the power of laughter from this study will make laughing even more fun. Do you agree?
